Lament Of The Forgotten King Part 1 - Passage Of The Crown

from Keep Away From Heat by Tony Castellano

/

about

This song was inspired by the Steve Hackett track "The Steppes", off of his 1980 'Defector' album; as well as the title track off of Tony Spada's 'Balance Of Power' album, a song we frequently played early in the set at gigs since the big, dramatically slow beat lends itself well to live performance.

lyrics

my father never was here he spent most of the time crusading with pseudo-Christian ideas for the church now I never really quite understood why now I hear the king has died they say he was betrayed from the inside his trust must’ve had their blinders on a royal dagger in his chest while he lay sound at rest they say someone slipped in with an evil grin upon their shoulders someone very close heart full of anger why would they do such an evil thing to my father crowning king when our country’s so close to war now will they look at me to lead them how what the the hell am I to say I never thought the crown would come my way on such a dark and awful day being heir son to the throne now why has this thing happened so young in my life now will they look at me and say he’s just a princely puppet on dispay will they listen to what I say and will they follow me like my father what will I do if they desert me the empty crown is just for the taking is it my time to put it on to go out and lead the masses to fill his armor and take the passage he was such a great king now he’s gone from this place from his throne to the great to the hall where his ancient fathers call ‘til we meet again in the great in the halls of the ancient king where our fathers call it’s been twenty years away my father put on the golden crown and picked up the seal with his crimson gauntlet no one dared stand in his way in the silence of the halls I can hear the priests at praying for the mighty one that falls and on the tablet where he lay he looks so aged frail broken is this the final price he paid for hidden evil deeds unspoken or just a pawn’s final move from the outside will the people hush look and say this pampered prince seems so weak on the inside as the funeral pyre burns will they take to this crowning passage or has their faith and hope just turned to ashes and who shall I trust to be by my side is there a traitor on the floor as the great council stands before me a trickier game I’ve never played before it’s a cold and somber day dark shadows at the coronation perhaps it’s better off this way I must clear my mind of such frustration and leave it up to God’s recreation I should never have come this way but I’ll take it every dog has his day
