Another one of the last songs I wrote for The Bud Collins Trio, appearing on the June 1989 'Shaky Town' album. In that version, the second part was a more uptempo jam-orientated progression written by Chris Duers, and there was no cross-fade. The music was inspired by an unused outtake from Genesis' 1976 'Trick of the Tail' album called "It's Yourself". Lyrically the song has an attitude and subject matter similar to much of Robert Wyatt's introspective mid-70s solo work.

This is a brilliant album - really really brilliant! In my opinion, it's even better than its follow-up "When The Dust Settles...", although this is hard to imagine. On "Decade Reference", everything just falls into place - the exquisite compositions, the great vocals, a stunning guitar sound, many exciting keyboard arrangements... a real joy to my ears, which have to witness too much musical garbage nowadays in exactly this genre. I'm a long-time fan of Dutch prog - an affection that dates back to the 70's when "Focus", "Kayak", and "Finch" issued their legendary albums, and that was nourished over time by newer bands like "Trion", "Flamborough Head", "Us", "Like Wendy"... and "Fractal Mirror", of course. Dutch prog usually exposes a highly developed passion for great melodies and lush, classically oriented orchestration. The endlessly meandering vocal and instrumental lines, as well as the overwhelming mellotron arrangements found everywhere on this four-track EP, are a perfect example. Sven B. Schreiber (sbs)
