(Pink) Slipped Again

from Keep Away From Heat by Tony Castellano

/

about

Another song about being laid-off (referencing "Pink Slip" off 'The Red Hour' album), once again based on true-life experience. However, I got hired back soon afterwards when my boss (who was on vacation at the time the decision was made by higher-ups to give me the axe) loudly protested. A pretty depressing song lyrically, but that's what it's like when you're given the slip.

lyrics

august twenty-nine the second time I came to realize that all was not fine a call from HR summoned me to their room little did I know that my life would change soon they asked me sit and told me to relax then I found out I was getting the axe after busting my ass for them nearly twelve years I was now realizing the worst of my fears it’s nothing to do with you they were quick to assure costs must be cut and we’re sorry to say that it’s your position we’ve taken away the CEO has decided you should be let go I was the best engineer in that place I was always there and never came in late the quality of my work was always top-notch I never believed I’d get kicked in the crotch they’d all come to me with impossible deadlines I’d get it done right and get it done on time I saved their skins so many times I’ve lost count now I was being unceremoniously tossed out how naïve to believe I’d get my just reward they used me then screwed me and threw me away and all I’d done for them was completely ignored you’re raised to believe that it pays to work hard but you’re always at the mercy of the brown-noser’s card some over-ambitious little shit who wants to rule the scene will convince the big boss you’re not part of the team at that point it’s hopeless and you haven’t got a prayer so just clean out your desk and get the hell out of there you thought you were indispensible the crucial cornerstone then you’re pink-slipped again they’ve given you the bone they put you on salary which you first think is great until you realize you’re not paid to work late they get you to work more and more hours for free by saying it’s your duty to the company they screw you out of raises two years in a row and have the nerve to force you to take a week-long furlough yet you endure it believing better days will come when you’ll finally get your well-deserved day in the sun don’t know why I tried to to my very best it doesn’t seem to count for a thing in real life when some cold rich bastard sticks you with the knife there was plenty of work to keep me busy for months so it’s not like I was sitting around twiddling my thumbs they said cutting my job was part of lean management then they promptly replaced me with a minimum-wage temp now unemployed and bitter and steadily growing poor I’ll never again be able to trust that anything is secure I wonder what’s the point of helping others anyway when they always will betray you guess I’m calling it a day if that’s the way it’s gonna be I’m calling it a day
