Lament Of The Forgotten King Part 5 - Silly Old Man

from Keep Away From Heat by Tony Castellano

about

I thought Robert Mulcahy's 'Sinatra-esque' vocal stylings worked well for this tune. Also, I try to have at least some trombone on every album release (on 'Fun-Size' I played it during the end section of "Billy's Redemption" and on 'The Red Hour' it appeared in the second chorus of "Jagged Helmet", although I don't think there's any on "Walking Like Rudy"). I played trombone in the middle and high-school bands and still remember how to do it but no longer have any stamina for prolonged playing so when I haul it out I have to get a decent take as quickly as possible before my lips completely give out. This means that the takes I end up using are frequently far from perfectly executed, but I think that adds to the overall charming nature of the trombone sound (in appropriate situations, of course).

lyrics

see the old man on the beach the ocean’s door he sits there every day for many score go ask him what the hell he’s waiting for he’ll tell you a tale of knights and of kings that crazy old thing they taunt him you know how cruel that kids can be but still he sits staring out to the sea waiting for someone or something that will never be he sits so patiently pointlessly he’ll tell you a tale a tale he said is true he’ll tell you of a far off kingdom overthrew where he was master of the land silly silly old man see the old man quietly into the sky look close you’ll see a teardrop in the eye he’ll be there until the day the day he dies but ours is not to reason why this crazy guy tall tales tall tales of make believe is it a story that’s pulled out of his sleeve where he was king of all the lands this crazy crazy old man
